# AI poster generator: a printable poster from a sentence

[Canonical HTML page](https://gradiently.design/guide/ai-poster-generator)

Describing a poster is easy. Getting one that prints sharp, spells the venue right and reads from across a room takes a little more. Here is the sentence to write and the sizes to ask for.

## The short version

- An AI poster generator works best when the sentence you give it contains every fact: what, when, where, who it is for and the feeling you want.
- Printed posters need 300 pixels per inch, so an A4 poster is 2480×3508 pixels and an A3 poster is 3508×4961.
- Posters with words generated into the image often come out misspelt, so the text should be a real, editable layer.
- Professional printers usually ask for 3 mm of bleed around the edge and important content kept well inside the trim.
- A poster is read from a distance in a few seconds, so one large headline and three supporting facts beat a full paragraph.

An **AI poster generator** can take one sentence, such as “a jazz night at The Crown on Friday 20 November, doors at eight, free entry”, and return a finished poster. Whether you can print it depends on three things: the sentence contains every fact, the design is made at a real print size like A3 at 3508×4961 pixels, and the words are actual text rather than letters painted into an image. Get those right and the result is ready for the printer.

## Poster sizes in pixels for printing

Print needs far more pixels than a screen. The usual standard is 300 pixels per inch at the final printed size. Ask your generator for one of these exact sizes, not for a high resolution poster, which means different things to different tools.

| Format | Printed size | Pixels at 300 dpi |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A5 flyer | 148×210 mm | 1748×2480 |
| A4 poster | 210×297 mm | 2480×3508 |
| US Letter | 8.5×11 in | 2550×3300 |
| A3 poster | 297×420 mm | 3508×4961 |
| 18×24 in poster | 18×24 in | 5400×7200 |

Common poster sizes at 300 dpi. For anything larger, ask your printer what resolution they need; big posters are viewed from further away.

- A4 2480×3508: 2480 × 3508
- US Letter 2550×3300: 2550 × 3300
- 18×24 in 5400×7200: 5400 × 7200

A sizes share one shape, so an A4 design scales cleanly to A3. US Letter and 18×24 are slightly wider and need their own layout. [Poster size guide](https://gradiently.design/guide/poster-size-guide) has the rest.

## Write the sentence the generator needs

Most disappointing AI posters come from a prompt that describes a mood and leaves out the facts. The generator then invents them, or leaves gaps. Give it the information a stranger would need to turn up, and only then the feeling.

```text
Make an A3 portrait poster for [event].
What: [one line, e.g. Jazz night with the Ellie Marsh Trio]
When: [day, date, time]
Where: [venue and town]
Entry: [free / tickets at the door / link]
For: [who should come]
Feel: [three words, e.g. late, smoky, warm]
Headline should be readable from three metres away.
No extra text beyond these facts.
```

A poster brief. The last line stops the tool adding slogans, fake websites or a made up sponsor.

Compare two requests. *A cool poster for our jazz night* gives the tool almost nothing, so it falls back on saxophones, gold script and an invented date. *An A3 poster for a free jazz night at The Crown, Friday 20 November, doors at eight, late and warm, for locals who like live music* gives it everything it needs, and leaves the style to work out from the feeling rather than from clichés.

Keep the headline short. A poster is read on the move, often from across a street or a room, so it gets a few seconds. One large line and three small facts beat a paragraph. [Poster design](https://gradiently.design/guide/poster-design) explains the hierarchy in more depth.

## Image generator or design tool

There are two kinds of tool behind the phrase AI poster generator, and the difference decides whether you can fix a typo. An image generator paints the entire poster, words included, as one picture. A design tool with AI builds a layout: a background, real text in real fonts and shapes, all editable afterwards. [AI image generators vs design tools](https://gradiently.design/guide/ai-image-generator-vs-design-tool) compares them properly.

### Generated as one image

- Words can come out misspelt or warped
- Changing the date means generating again
- Size may not match a print format
- No bleed, no crop marks
- Style often resembles other AI images

### Designed with real layers

- Text spelt exactly as you typed it
- Edit any fact in seconds
- Made at the exact print size
- Print PDF with bleed and crop marks
- Your own fonts, colours and background

Gradiently's Designer is the second kind. Describe the poster in a sentence and it asks for anything missing, writes the words, lays the design out in your Mark at the size you chose and can make the other sizes too, such as an Instagram post and a Story for the same night. Every word stays editable in the Studio, and because the Mark knows where the text is, it moves its calmest, best contrasting region behind the headline.

An A3 portrait poster for a jazz night at The Crown on Friday 20 November, doors at 8pm, free entry

The A3 poster: one headline, three facts, nothing else.

The jazz night poster recomposed as a portrait Instagram post with the same wording

The same poster as a portrait Instagram post, from the same request.

## Preparing an AI poster for print

1. **Check every fact** Read the date, time, venue and spelling of every name aloud. AI tools fill gaps confidently.
2. **Add bleed** Printers trim posters after printing. Most in the UK and Europe ask for 3 mm of extra background on every edge (US printers often ask for 0.125 in) so no white slivers appear. [Bleed and margins](https://gradiently.design/guide/bleed-and-margins) explains it.
3. **Keep words inside the safe area** Leave a margin of at least 5 mm inside the trim line for any text or logo.
4. **Export a print PDF** Use a PDF with bleed and crop marks rather than a JPEG. In Gradiently, print PDF export is part of Pro.
5. **Print one copy at home first** Even on a small printer, a test sheet shows whether the headline reads from a distance and whether dark areas go muddy.

> **Dark gradients on paper** Deep, smooth gradients can print darker and show banding. A little grain helps; [printing gradients](https://gradiently.design/guide/print-gradients) covers what to ask your printer.

## Poster ideas worth trying

- A gig poster with only the band name huge and the date small along the bottom.
- A café menu poster for the window: five items, prices aligned, one line of welcome.
- A community fundraiser with the goal written as a single sentence headline.
- A wall poster of a quote you live by, set large in a serif on a dark ground.
- A series of three posters for one event, released a week apart, each with the same background and a different line.

## FAQ

### What resolution does a printable poster need?

Around 300 pixels per inch at the printed size. An A3 poster is 3508×4961 pixels and an A4 poster is 2480×3508.

### Can an AI poster generator spell text correctly?

Tools that paint words into the image often misspell them. Tools that set the words as real text layers, such as Gradiently's Designer, spell them exactly as written and let you edit them.

### What should I include in an AI poster prompt?

What the event is, the date and time, the venue, how to get in, who it is for and three words for the feeling, plus an instruction not to add anything else.

### Do I need bleed on a poster?

If a printer is trimming it, yes. Most ask for 3 mm of background beyond the trim on every edge, with text kept well inside.
