# Discord banner sizes: server 960 x 540 and profile 680 x 240

[Canonical HTML page](https://gradiently.design/guide/discord-banner-size)

Discord has three banners, each in a different place and shape. One sits above your channel list, one greets people you invite, and one sits behind your own name. Here is how to design all three.

## The short version

- The Discord server banner size is 960×540 pixels, a 16:9 image shown at the top of the server's channel list.
- The Discord profile banner size is 680×240 pixels, shown behind your avatar on your profile card.
- The server invite background, sometimes called the invite splash, is a 16:9 image best designed at 1920×1080.
- Server banners and invite backgrounds become available at Server Boost levels, and custom profile banners need Discord Nitro.
- Each banner is partly covered by Discord's interface, so key details belong in the open areas rather than the edges.

The **Discord banner size** depends on which banner you mean. A server banner is 960×540 pixels, a 16:9 image shown at the top of your server's channel list. A profile banner is 680×240 pixels and sits behind your avatar on your profile card. The server invite background, shown to people opening an invite link, is also 16:9 and looks best at 1920×1080. Each is partly covered by Discord's interface, so design them as atmosphere with the important part kept clear.

## Discord banner dimensions at a glance

| Banner | Size | Ratio | Available with |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Server banner | 960×540 px | 16:9 | Server Boost level 2 |
| Invite background | 1920×1080 px | 16:9 | Server Boost level 1 |
| Profile banner | 680×240 px | 17:6 | Discord Nitro |

Boost levels and Nitro perks are set by Discord and change from time to time. Check Server Settings or your profile settings for what is available to you.

- Server banner 960×540: 960 × 540
- Invite background 1920×1080: 1920 × 1080
- Profile banner 680×240: 680 × 240

The three Discord banners drawn to scale. The server banner and invite background share a shape; the profile banner is a short strip.

Export PNG for graphics, text and gradients, JPEG for photographs. Animated banners use GIF and need a higher boost level for servers or Nitro for profiles; if you make one, keep the motion slow, because the banner sits beside people reading and typing. [GIF vs MP4](https://gradiently.design/guide/gif-vs-mp4) explains why GIFs need careful colour.

## Discord server banner: 960 x 540

The server banner sits at the top of the channel sidebar, above your list of channels. The sidebar is narrow, so the banner is shown small, and the server name and a menu arrow are laid over its top edge. Members see it every time they open the server, which makes it the most viewed image you own on Discord.

- **Keep the top band calm.** Roughly the top 100 pixels carry the server name in white, so a darker or plainer top helps it read.
- **Put any image or words in the middle.** The sidebar crop and scaling make edge detail disappear.
- **Skip small text.** At sidebar size, anything under about 60 pixels tall in your 960×540 design is unreadable.
- **Let it fade into the sidebar.** A banner whose bottom edge darkens towards Discord's dark theme sits in the interface instead of on it.

## Discord invite background

The invite background fills the screen behind the invitation card when someone opens your invite link in a browser. The card itself sits in the centre, showing your server icon, name and the Accept button. That means the middle of your image is mostly hidden. Design the invite background as a full frame of colour or texture, with any detail pushed towards the edges and corners, the opposite of most banners.

### Server banner

- Shown small, in the sidebar
- Seen by members every day
- Words or image in the centre
- Top edge covered by the server name

### Invite background

- Shown large, full screen
- Seen once, by new arrivals
- Centre covered by the invitation card
- Detail at the edges, centre plain

- Dark centre, violet edges: `radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% 50%, #0b0b14 0%, #1e1b4b 45%, #6d28d9 80%, #c084fc 100%)`
- Dark centre, emerald edges: `radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% 50%, #08130f 0%, #064e3b 50%, #10b981 90%, #6ee7b7 100%)`
- Dark centre, ember edges: `radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% 50%, #140a05 0%, #7c2d12 50%, #f97316 90%, #fdba74 100%)`

Invite backgrounds that are quiet in the middle, where the card sits, and glow towards the edges people can actually see.

## Discord profile banner: 680 x 240

With Nitro you can upload a profile banner, shown across the top of your profile card when someone clicks your name. Your round avatar overlaps its lower left, and the card is narrow, so the banner works best as colour and texture with any detail on the right. Without Nitro, you can still pick a solid banner colour, which is worth matching to your avatar. Your profile banner travels with you into every server you join, so choose something that fits all of them rather than one community's in joke.

## How to design a matching set of Discord banners

1. **Choose one background family** The same colours or material across server banner, invite background, server icon and role colours. A community that looks like one place feels like one.
2. **Design the invite background first** At 1920×1080 it is the largest, so it sets the look. Keep its centre plain.
3. **Make the server banner from it** Same background at 960×540, with the server name or a tagline centred and a calm top edge.
4. **Check in dark and light themes** Most members use dark mode, but not all. A banner whose edges fade to a mid tone sits well in either; [dark mode design](https://gradiently.design/guide/dark-mode-design) explains why.
5. **Preview at real size** Open the server on a laptop and a phone. If the words don't read in the sidebar, cut them or make them larger.

Gaming communities, study servers and creator Discords all benefit from the same idea: the server looks like the brand it belongs to. If your Discord supports a stream or channel, match it to your [Twitch streamer branding](https://gradiently.design/guide/twitch-streamer-branding) or [gaming channel art](https://gradiently.design/guide/gaming-channel-art). In Gradiently, one Mark gives you all three Discord sizes, rendered fresh for each shape rather than cropped, and on Pro a single step resizes a design to every size. Words placed on the Mark stay legible because it calms itself behind them. More shapes are in [social media image sizes](https://gradiently.design/guide/social-media-image-sizes).
