# Font size for Instagram posts: what reads on a phone

[Canonical HTML page](https://gradiently.design/guide/font-size-for-social-media)

A post you design at 1080 pixels wide is seen at roughly a third of that on a phone. Here are the sizes that survive the shrink, worked out from the canvas rather than guessed.

## The short version

- On a 1080 pixel wide Instagram post, headlines read well from about 90 px and body text should stay at 40 px or more.
- A phone shows a 1080 pixel post roughly 360 to 440 points wide, so every size you set shrinks to about a third.
- The smallest text on a post, such as labels and page numbers, should not drop below about 28 px.
- Stories and Reels use the same width as posts, so the same pixel sizes work, but the words must stay out of the top and bottom interface.
- The reliable test is to view the design at real phone size and at grid thumbnail size before posting.

The safest **font size for Instagram posts** designed at 1080 pixels wide is 90 to 140 px for a headline, 48 to 64 px for a supporting line and at least 40 px for body text on carousels. Nothing should go below about 28 px, even a page number. Those numbers look oversized on a laptop, and that is the point: a phone shows the post at roughly a third of its real width, and type that feels generous on your monitor arrives at a comfortable reading size in someone's hand.

## Why text that looks big on your screen is small on a phone

You design on a canvas 1080 pixels wide, often zoomed to fit a large monitor. Instagram then shows that post across the width of a phone, which is roughly 360 to 440 points depending on the model. So each point on the phone carries about two and a half to three of your pixels. Divide any size you set by roughly 2.7 and you get what the reader actually sees.

| Size on a 1080 px canvas | Seen on a phone (approx.) | Feels like |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 28 px | about 10 pt | Small print on a receipt |
| 40 px | about 14 pt | Comfortable reading text |
| 56 px | about 20 pt | A clear subheading |
| 96 px | about 35 pt | A headline that stops the thumb |
| 140 px | about 51 pt | A poster line |

Rough conversions for a phone around 390 points wide. Phone system text sits near 17 pt, which is why 40 px is the floor for anything people should read comfortably.

This is also why posts copied from print or slides often fail. A 12 pt caption on an A4 flyer has a whole sheet of paper around it and is held at reading distance. The same proportion on a phone tile is a grey smudge.

## Font size for Instagram posts, stories and carousels

Every Instagram format is 1080 pixels wide, so one set of sizes covers posts at 1080×1350, squares at 1080×1080 and stories at 1080×1920. What changes is how much height you have and what the app lays over the top.

| Role | Size at 1080 px wide | Share of canvas width | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Headline | 90 to 140 px | about 8 to 13% | Five to eight words at most |
| Subheading or detail | 48 to 64 px | about 4.5 to 6% | One line if possible |
| Body on carousels | 40 to 48 px | about 4% | Three to five short lines per slide |
| Labels, page numbers, handles | 28 to 32 px | about 3% | Capitals with extra spacing help |
| Big single word or number | 200 px and up | 20% or more | When the word is the design |

Working ranges, not platform rules. Thinking in share of width means the same proportions hold if you design at a different size.

- Portrait post 1080×1350: 1080 × 1350
- Square post 1080×1080: 1080 × 1080
- Story 1080×1920: 1080 × 1920

Three formats, one width. The sizes above carry across all three; only the space for lines and the safe zones differ.

In a story, keep words out of roughly the top and bottom 250 pixels, where the profile name and reply field sit; [Instagram Story size](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-story-size) has the full map. In a portrait post, remember the profile grid crops it towards the centre, so a headline near the top edge may vanish there. [Instagram grid crop](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-profile-grid-crop) shows exactly what survives.

## How big a headline should be on Instagram

Start from the words, not the number. A headline of four words can run at 140 px and still fit on two lines. A headline of twelve words forced to fit at 140 px will spill to five lines, and the honest fix is to cut words rather than shrink the type. If you catch yourself reaching for 70 px to fit a sentence, the sentence is too long for one post.

Four words at headline size and one short detail line: the proportions that read at arm's length on any phone.

A square post with two large words reading Open late and a small label reading Fridays

Fewer words buy bigger type. Two words can run large enough to read inside the profile grid.

Weight matters as much as size. A light weight at 120 px can read weaker than a semibold at 96 px, because thin strokes dissolve when the image is scaled down and compressed. For headlines on a phone, stay between semibold and black. [Best fonts for social media](https://gradiently.design/guide/fonts-for-social-media) suggests faces that hold up at these sizes.

## Font size for carousel slides and body text

Carousels are where small text creeps in, because each slide tries to explain something. Hold body text at 40 px or more with a line height of about 1.3, and keep lines to around 30 characters on a portrait slide. That gives you four or five lines per slide, which is roughly what someone will read before swiping.

### Avoid

- A paragraph of 24 px text on one slide
- Light weights under 60 px
- Shrinking type to fit the copy
- Page numbers and handles at 18 px
- Text running into the story's top and bottom bands

### Do

- Four short lines at 40 to 48 px
- Regular or medium for body, semibold up for headlines
- Cutting words, or adding a slide
- Small labels at 28 px with a little letter spacing
- Words kept in the middle of the frame

If a slide needs more than five lines, split it. A ten slide carousel with large type reads better than a five slide one with small type, and every swipe is a small reason to keep going. [Text layout for social media posts](https://gradiently.design/guide/text-hierarchy-social) covers how to arrange those lines so the eye knows where to start.

## How to test font size at thumb size

1. **Zoom to real phone size** Set your canvas zoom so the post is about 7 cm wide on your monitor, or simply send it to your phone. Read every line without leaning in.
2. **Shrink it to grid size** Zoom out until the post is about 3 cm wide, roughly a tile in the profile grid. The headline should still be legible; the rest can blur.
3. **Squint test the hierarchy** Squint at the post at phone size. You should see one dominant line, one secondary line and nothing competing with them.
4. **Check the darkest and brightest spots** On a gradient or photo, look at the words where the background is closest to their colour. Small text fails there first.
5. **Post to a private account or Close Friends** Compression softens fine strokes. Seeing the uploaded version, with the app's interface on top, is the only final proof.

Background contrast is the hidden half of font size. Text at 40 px on a calm, dark area reads better than 56 px over a busy patch. If your background is a gradient, put the words where it is calmest, or follow [text on a gradient](https://gradiently.design/guide/text-on-gradient). In Gradiently the Mark does this for you: its calmest region moves behind the words and Auto ink picks light or dark type line by line, so smaller lines stay readable without boxes, shadows or blur.

> **One rule to remember** If you need text below 40 px to fit everything, you have too many words for one post. Cut, or make it a carousel.

## FAQ

### What font size should I use for Instagram posts?

On a 1080 pixel wide canvas, use 90 to 140 px for headlines, 48 to 64 px for subheadings and at least 40 px for body text.

### What is the minimum font size for an Instagram story?

Keep anything people need to read at 40 px or more, and small labels at no less than about 28 px on the 1080×1920 canvas.

### Is font size in pixels or points for Instagram?

Design in pixels at 1080 wide. A phone shows the post roughly a third as wide, so 40 px arrives at about 14 pt, a comfortable reading size.

### What font size works for carousel slides?

Body text of 40 to 48 px with four or five short lines per slide, and a headline of 90 px or more on the first slide.

### Why does my text look blurry after posting?

Instagram compresses uploads, which softens thin strokes and small type. Use heavier weights and larger sizes, and export text heavy designs as PNG rather than JPG.
