# Instagram branding: a profile people recognise in one scroll

[Canonical HTML page](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-branding)

Someone taps your name from a comment. You have about one swipe to show them who you are. This is how to make your profile, highlights and grid do that job together.

## The short version

- Instagram branding is the set of choices that make your profile and posts recognisable before anyone reads your name.
- A visitor sees five things in order: the profile photo, the name and bio, the highlight covers, the grid and finally individual posts.
- The Instagram profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 tile cropped from the centre, so 1080×1350 portrait posts survive it best.
- A small set of recurring post templates on one background family makes a feed feel planned without making it repetitive.
- Highlight covers should share one style and one colour family, because they sit directly under the bio and frame the whole profile.

**Instagram branding** is everything that makes your profile and posts recognisable before anyone reads your name: the profile photo, the name and bio, the highlight covers, the grid and the templates your posts are built on. A visitor takes those in, top to bottom, in a second or two. If they all point the same way, the profile feels like a brand. If each one is doing its own thing, it feels like a scrapbook.

Work through the profile in the order a stranger sees it.

## Profile photo, name and bio

The profile photo is shown as a small circle everywhere: beside comments, in stories, in search. A full logo with a tagline turns to mush at that size. Use a single symbol, a monogram or a tight portrait, centred, on a background in your brand colour. The same circle should appear on every platform you use, so people who know you elsewhere recognise you instantly.

The **name** field is searchable, separately from your username. Put what you do in it, not just who you are: "Rosa Bakes · Sourdough in Leeds" is found by people searching for sourdough. The **bio** gets four short lines: what you offer, who it is for, one proof point, and where the link goes. If you send people to a page of links, design that page in the same look; [link in bio page design](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-bio-link-page) shows how.

| Element | What it should do | Common mistake |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Profile photo | Read clearly as a small circle | A full logo with tiny text |
| Name field | Say what you do, in searchable words | Repeating the username |
| Bio | Offer, audience, proof, link | A list of emoji and slogans |
| Highlights | Frame the profile with one matching style | Random story stills as covers |
| Grid | Show one colour family and a few layouts | A different look on every post |

## Highlight covers that frame the profile

Highlights sit straight under the bio, so their covers act like a band of colour across the top of your profile. Pick one style for the set: all icons, all short words, or pure colour. Then keep one background family and one ink colour throughout. Covers are uploaded as full 1080×1920 story images and Instagram shows only a circle from the middle, so keep anything that matters large and centred. [Instagram highlight covers](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-highlight-covers) has the full method.

## Designing the grid for the 3:4 crop

Your profile grid now shows every post as a 3:4 tile cropped from the centre. A 1080×1350 portrait post loses only a sliver from each side, a square loses more, and a Reel cover loses a band from top and bottom. That has two consequences for branding: post in portrait wherever you can, and never put your headline right at the top or bottom of a Reel cover. [Instagram grid crop](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-profile-grid-crop) has the exact pixels.

- Post 1080×1350: 1080 × 1350
- Grid tile 3:4: 1080 × 1440
- Square 1080×1080: 1080 × 1080
- Reel 1080×1920: 1080 × 1920

A portrait post sits almost exactly inside the 3:4 grid tile. Squares and Reels are cropped harder.

Consistency on the grid does not mean identical posts. It means one colour family, one or two typefaces and a handful of recurring layouts, with photos and words changing inside them. [Instagram grid aesthetic](https://gradiently.design/guide/instagram-grid-aesthetic) explains how to plan rows of three without falling into a rigid puzzle.

## Post templates: a few layouts, used often

Most brands only need four or five templates, one for each kind of thing they post. Map them to your [content pillars](https://gradiently.design/guide/content-pillars): a tip, a product, a quote or review, an announcement, a carousel cover. Each template keeps its layout from week to week, and they all share the same background look. After a month, followers know what a post is before they read it.

The product template: same position for the name, same small line for the detail, every week.

The tip template on the same background. Different layout, unmistakably the same brand.

The background carries most of the recognition, because it is the largest area of every post. Gradiently starts there: you design on a Mark, a living gradient and material background that nobody else can export with once you have claimed it, and it renders correctly at 1080×1350, 1080×1920 and every other size from one design. The Mark also moves its calmest region behind your words, so the headline stays readable on every template.

## Instagram branding mistakes to avoid

### Avoid

- A new filter or palette every few weeks
- Puzzle grids split across several posts
- Text in the top and bottom of Reel covers
- Ten fonts across ten posts
- Highlights in five different styles

### Do

- One background family for months at a time
- Self contained posts that work in any order
- Words in the middle of every frame
- One heading and one body typeface
- One highlight style with matching colours

> **The thumb test** Screenshot your profile, shrink it to the size of a thumbnail and show it to a friend for two seconds. If they can say what you sell and roughly how you feel, the branding works.

Instagram rarely lives alone. Once the profile is settled, carry the same circle, colours and templates to your other channels with [consistent branding across social media](https://gradiently.design/guide/brand-consistency-across-platforms), and see [why every feed looks the same](https://gradiently.design/guide/why-every-feed-looks-the-same) for how to avoid blending in.

## FAQ

### What is Instagram branding?

The consistent choices that make your profile and posts recognisable: profile photo, name and bio, highlight covers, grid and post templates.

### What size should Instagram posts be for a consistent grid?

Post at 1080×1350, the 4:5 portrait size. The profile grid shows 3:4 tiles cropped from the centre, and portrait posts lose the least.

### How do I create an Instagram brand aesthetic?

Keep one colour family and background look, use one or two typefaces, and build posts from four or five recurring layouts.

### Should my Instagram profile picture be a logo or a photo?

Either, as long as it reads as a small circle. Use a simple symbol or a tight portrait, not a full logo with small text.

### Do highlight covers matter for branding?

Yes. They sit right under the bio and frame the whole profile, so a matching set in one style makes the account look considered.
