# Long pins on Pinterest: 1000 x 2100 and when to use them

[Canonical HTML page](https://gradiently.design/guide/pinterest-long-pin-size)

Long pins hold a whole checklist or infographic in one image, but the feed doesn't always show all of it. Design for the part people see first, and the rest becomes a reward for tapping.

## The short version

- The long pin size Pinterest supports is 1000×2100 pixels, a ratio of 1:2.1.
- Pinterest recommends a 2:3 ratio, and pins taller than that may be cut off in the feed until someone opens them.
- Design a long pin so its top 1500 pixels work as a complete standard pin, with the headline and hook inside that area.
- Long pins suit step-by-step guides, checklists, recipes and infographics, where the extra height carries real content.
- For most ideas a standard 1000×1500 pin, a series of pins or a carousel is the stronger choice.

The **long pin size Pinterest** supports is 1000×2100 pixels, a tall 1:2.1 frame with 600 more pixels of height than a standard 1000×1500 pin. The catch is that Pinterest recommends 2:3, and pins taller than that may be trimmed in the feed until someone taps to open them. So design a long pin as a standard pin with a bonus underneath: put the headline and the hook in the top 1500 pixels, and use the extra height for the steps, list or detail that reward the tap.

## Pinterest long pin dimensions

- Long pin 1000×2100: 1000 × 2100
- Standard pin 2:3: 1000 × 1500
- Square pin 1:1: 1000 × 1000

The three pin shapes to scale. The long pin is the standard pin with 600 pixels added below.

| Format | Size | Ratio | Shown in full in the feed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Long pin | 1000×2100 px | 1:2.1 | Not always: may be cut off |
| Standard pin | 1000×1500 px | 2:3 | Yes |
| Square pin | 1000×1000 px | 1:1 | Yes |

Width stays at 1000 pixels for every pin. Only the height changes.

Export long pins as PNG when they are mostly text, flat colour and gradients, and as high quality JPEG when they are mostly photographs. Text heavy infographics suffer most from compression, so keep body text no smaller than you would on a standard pin. The other formats are covered in [Pinterest pin size](https://gradiently.design/guide/pinterest-pin-size).

## How Pinterest truncates long pins

Pinterest's own guidance says pins with a ratio taller than 2:3 may be cut off in people's feeds. In practice that means a viewer scrolling the grid may see only the upper part of your pin, roughly the shape of a standard one, and needs to tap to see the rest. Once the pin is open, the full height shows. Pinterest adjusts its feed often, so treat truncation as something to design around, not something to test once and forget.

Headline and promise at the top, the list itself filling the extra height below.

1. **Treat 0 to 1500 px as the pin** The headline, the main image and the reason to save all sit here. If the pin were cut at 1500 pixels, it should still make complete sense.
2. **Signal that there is more** An eyebrow like "7 steps" or a list that visibly continues past the fold tells people the tap is worth it.
3. **Use 1500 to 2100 px for detail** The later steps, a summary, a small logo or your website. Content here is a bonus, never the hook.
4. **Keep the logo out of the bottom only** If your brand only appears at the foot, the cropped feed version is anonymous. Put a small mark or name near the top as well.

## When to use a long pin

Use a long pin when the height carries content people want to keep in one image. A recipe with ingredients and method, a packing list, a skincare routine, a colour palette with its codes, a beginner's guide in six steps. These are pins people save to come back to, and having it all in one picture is the point.

### Good long pins

- Step-by-step guides and tutorials
- Checklists and packing lists
- Recipes with ingredients and method
- Infographics comparing options
- Palettes with names and hex codes

### Better as a standard pin

- A single product photo
- A quote or one line of text
- A blog post headline
- A sale or announcement
- Anything with nothing to put below the fold

If the extra 600 pixels would only hold more background, use the 1000×1500 size. A standard pin shows in full, and a pin that is tall for the sake of being tall loses its bottom third for nothing. ## How to design an infographic pin

An infographic pin is read on a phone, a few centimetres wide, so the usual rules of [infographic design](https://gradiently.design/guide/infographic-design) tighten. Use one column. Number the steps. Keep each step to a short heading and one line. Use one accent colour for numbers or icons, and let the background stay calm so the text reads all the way down.

- Forest ink: #1f2a24
- Paper ground: #f6f1e7
- Sage panel: #d9e4d2
- Rust numbers: #c2410c
- Muted notes: #8a9a8e

A palette for a long recipe or routine pin: one dark ink, a light ground, a panel tone and one accent reserved for step numbers.

On a long gradient, contrast changes from top to bottom, so a line that reads at the top can fade at the foot. Gradiently's Marks handle this for you: the calmest, best contrasting region of the material moves behind the words, and auto ink picks light or dark type line by line. For the manual version, read [text on a gradient background](https://gradiently.design/guide/text-on-gradient).

## Alternatives to long pins

- **A series of standard pins.** Split a ten step guide into a few 1000×1500 pins, each complete, each linking to the same page.
- **A carousel pin.** Several images in one pin, swiped sideways, each shown in full.
- **A video pin.** Steps that animate one after another, at the same 2:3 or a vertical 9:16 frame.
- **A standard pin plus the full guide on your site.** The pin sells the idea; the page holds the detail.

Making both versions is quick when the design lives in one place. On Gradiently Pro you can resize a design to every size in one step and adjust each version, and bulk create can turn a spreadsheet of tips into a set of matching pins. ## FAQ

### What is the long pin size on Pinterest?

1000×2100 pixels, a 1:2.1 ratio. It is 600 pixels taller than the standard 1000×1500 pin.

### Do long pins get cut off on Pinterest?

They can. Pinterest says pins taller than 2:3 may be cut off in the feed, so keep the headline and hook in the top 1500 pixels.

### Are long pins better than standard pins?

Only when the extra height holds content people want, such as steps, checklists or recipes. For a single image or headline, a 1000×1500 pin is better.

### What size should an infographic pin be?

Use 1000×2100 for a long infographic or 1000×1500 for a shorter one, with the title and first points in the top 1500 pixels.
