The short version
- A Google Meet background should be a 16:9 image at 1920×1080 pixels, uploaded from the backgrounds panel before or during a call.
- Meet can crop video tiles to fit the grid and on phones, so keep any words high and well in from the edges.
- Your Meet self view can show the background mirrored, while other people see it the right way round.
- Calm gradients with soft light behind the head hide edge flicker far better than detailed photos.
- A short line of text, such as a name and role, is the most useful thing a call background can carry.

To set a branded Google Meet background, design a 16:9 image at 1920×1080 pixels, keep your name or logo small and high but well inside the edges, then upload it from Meet's backgrounds panel before you join or during the call. That takes a few clicks. The part people miss is the crop: Meet fits video into tiles of different shapes depending on the grid and the device, so anything near the edge of your background can disappear for some of the people watching.
How to change your background on Google Meet
- 1
Open the backgrounds panel
On the screen before you join, select the visual effects or background option on your self view. During a call, open the three dot menu and choose the backgrounds or effects option.
- 2
Upload your image
Choose the add or upload option and pick your file from your computer. It is usually kept in your list for next time.
- 3
Check the preview
Your self view is mirrored, so text looks reversed to you. Others see it correctly.
- 4
Test on a second device
Join the same call from your phone, muted. You will see the cropped tile your colleagues see.
Google's own steps live in its Meet help centre, including which browsers and devices support effects. If your account is managed by a school or company, an administrator can switch custom backgrounds off.
Google Meet background size and the crop to plan for
Make the background at 1920×1080. It matches the shape of webcam video and stays crisp when someone pins you full screen. Then plan for the frames it gets squeezed into. In a large grid, Meet can trim the sides of each tile so they fit neatly, and on a phone held upright your video can be shown in a taller shape.

The practical rule is the same as on any call: words high, in the upper left or upper right. Meet just asks for a deeper margin. Picture a square in the middle of the frame, the part that survives every crop, and keep your name inside or close to its upper edge rather than tucked into the far corner. Your head sits below it, so the words stay clear of you too.
Name and studio sit high and inside the central area, so they survive a trimmed tile as well as full screen.
What makes a Google Meet background look professional
Background replacement is a guess, made many times a second, about which pixels are you. The guess goes wrong around hair, hands and headphones. On a detailed photo, every wrong guess shows as a flicker of a sharp edge. On a soft gradient, a wrong pixel is nearly the same colour as the one beside it, so the mistake disappears. That single fact explains most of what looks professional on a call.
Looks cut out
- A busy photo of an office or a beach
- A bright white wall behind a dim face
- Fine stripes or patterns that shimmer
- Text pushed right into the corners
- A huge logo behind your head
Looks intentional
- A soft gradient with light behind the head
- Tones close to the brightness of your face
- A gentle grain rather than a pattern
- One line of text high and well inside the edges
- Colours that differ from your hair and top
Light helps as much as the image. Face a window or a lamp, keep bright light out from behind you, and sit a little away from the real wall. The clearer the difference between you and your room, the cleaner the edges Meet draws.
Google Meet background ideas worth making
Different calls want different walls. Here are backgrounds that suit the most common reasons people use Meet, each with the one line of text it should carry.

For freelancers and consultants, the call background is part of your personal branding: the same colours as your website and proposals make you look like one coherent business. Teams that live in more than one app can use the same files everywhere; see Microsoft Teams backgrounds and Zoom virtual backgrounds for the small differences.
A background nobody else on the call has
The built in Meet backgrounds are shared by everyone, which is exactly why they look anonymous. Any calm gradient you make yourself is a step up. If you want a look that is genuinely yours, a Gradiently Mark is a living gradient with exactly one owner at a time, so the background behind you on a call can be the same one on your posts, slides and webinar backgrounds. Designing with any unclaimed Mark is free; claiming one makes it yours alone and lets you export with it. For more on choosing calm colours, see minimalist backgrounds.
Questions people ask
What size should a Google Meet background be?
1920×1080 pixels, a 16:9 landscape image. It matches webcam video and stays sharp full screen.
Why is my Google Meet background backwards?
Your self view is mirrored. Other participants see the background the right way round, so don't flip the image.
Why is the text on my Meet background cut off for others?
Meet can crop tiles to fit the grid and phone screens. Keep words high but pulled well in from the corners.
Why can't I upload a background in Google Meet?
Your browser or device may not support effects, or an administrator at your school or company has turned custom backgrounds off.
Can I use the same background in Meet, Teams and Zoom?
Yes. A 1920×1080 image works in all three, as long as the words sit well inside the edges.
