The short version
- The Reddit banner size for a community is 1920×384 pixels, a 5:1 strip across the top of the subreddit.
- Reddit crops the banner differently on desktop and in the mobile app, so the left and right edges can disappear on phones.
- The community icon sits near the lower left of the banner on many layouts, so that corner should hold only background.
- The best subreddit banners are mostly texture or colour with any words or key image held in the centre.
- For images in Reddit posts, 1080×1080 square is a reliable size that displays well in feeds on both desktop and mobile.

The Reddit banner size for a community is 1920×384 pixels, a 5:1 strip that runs across the top of your subreddit. On phones Reddit shows a shorter, narrower crop of it, and the community icon sits over or just below the lower left on many layouts. So treat the banner as a band of colour or texture, keep any words or key image in the central third, and leave the edges and the lower left corner as background.

Upload a PNG for flat colour, illustration or text, and a high quality JPEG for photographs. Make it at exactly 1920×384 so Reddit doesn't stretch it, and remember that a thin strip shown on a large monitor magnifies any banding in a gradient. A touch of grain prevents that, as gradient banding explains.
How the Reddit banner crops on mobile
On a desktop browser the banner shows wide. In the Reddit app on a phone, the same image is shown at a different proportion, which usually means the left and right sides are trimmed and the strip may be scaled. Depending on the current version of Mod Tools, Reddit may also let you upload a separate mobile banner. If you only upload one, design it to survive the mobile crop.

Subreddit banner ideas
Communities are judged by their members, not their banners, but a considered banner signals that the place is looked after. That matters when someone lands from search and decides whether to join. It also helps regulars spot the community at a glance in a crowded feed. Most good banners fall into one of these:
- Pure texture. A gradient, pattern or material in the community's colours. It never fights with the name and never dates.
- A wide crop of the subject. A skyline for a city sub, a forest floor for a foraging sub, a keyboard close up for a mechanical keyboards sub, centred.
- Name and tagline. Only if the tagline adds something, such as the community's purpose or rule of thumb.
- Seasonal versions. A different colour for an annual event or challenge, swapped back after.
A symmetrical banner is a simple trick for an unpredictable crop. When the colour is darkest at both edges and lit in the middle, any trim from either side still leaves a balanced strip. The same logic of keeping the important part centred is behind banner design generally.
Avoid
- Text across the full width
- A logo in the lower left, under the icon
- A tall photo squashed into a strip
- Fine detail that turns to noise when scaled
- Words repeating the subreddit name beside it
Do
- Words, if any, in the centre third
- Edges as calm background
- A wide crop chosen for the strip
- Bold shapes and soft colour
- A tagline that adds meaning
Check the banner against both of Reddit's themes, too. Many members browse in dark mode, where the page around your strip turns near black, and others in light mode, where it is white. A banner with a hard white edge can look like a pasted rectangle on a dark page, and a very dark banner can look heavy on a light one. Mid tones, or edges that fade towards a neutral, sit comfortably in both. Dark mode design covers the wider principle.
Reddit post image size
For images in posts, a 1080×1080 square is the dependable choice: it shows fully in card view on desktop and in the mobile feed. Portrait images at 1080×1350 take more of the phone screen. Very tall images get shortened in the feed until opened, and very wide ones become a thin band. Reddit is text first, so put the words that matter in the post title; the image should show, not repeat.

Mod announcements, rules cards and event posts look more official when they share the banner's colours. In Gradiently you can design the 1920×384 banner and the 1080×1080 posts from one Mark, so the subreddit has a consistent look; on Pro, resizing a design to every size takes one step, and each size is rendered for its own shape rather than cropped. Questions people ask
What size is a Reddit community banner?
1920×384 pixels, a 5:1 strip.
Why is my subreddit banner cut off on mobile?
The Reddit app shows the banner at a different proportion from desktop, which usually trims the sides. Keep words and key images in the central third.
What size should images in Reddit posts be?
1080×1080 square shows reliably on desktop and mobile. Portrait 1080×1350 also works and takes more of a phone screen.
Where do I change a subreddit banner?
In Mod Tools, under the community's appearance settings. You need to be a moderator with permission to edit the community's look.
