The short version
- The YouTube Shorts thumbnail size is 1080×1920 pixels, the same 9:16 vertical frame as the Short itself.
- A Short's cover is normally a frame from the video, chosen in the YouTube mobile app when you upload.
- Because Shorts covers are shown in several crops across YouTube, headlines and faces belong in the centre of the frame.
- Designing one deliberate cover frame and placing it in the video gives you a cover that looks the same every time.
- The 1080×1920 frame is shared with TikTok covers, Instagram Reels and stories, so one vertical design can serve all of them.

The YouTube Shorts thumbnail size is 1080×1920 pixels, a vertical 9:16 frame identical to the Short itself. Unlike a long video, where you upload a separate 1280×720 image, a Short's cover is usually a frame picked from the video in the YouTube mobile app. So the practical answer is twofold: make the video 1080×1920, and build one frame inside it that is designed to be the cover, with its words held in the centre where every crop keeps them.

If you also publish long videos, the horizontal rules are in YouTube thumbnail size. Keep the two in the same visual family so a viewer recognises your channel in either shape.

Where YouTube crops a Shorts thumbnail
A Short's cover rarely appears at its full height. On the channel's Shorts tab and in the Shorts shelf it sits in a tall card that trims a little from the top and bottom. In some search results and on desktop it can be shown smaller still, sometimes close to a square. The interface also lays the title, channel name and buttons over the lower part of the frame while the Short plays.
The safe answer is a central band. Keep the headline, the face and anything that identifies the Short within the middle of the frame, roughly between 420 and 1500 pixels from the top, and treat everything above and below as background. The general principle is covered in social media safe zones.
Avoid
- A headline at the very top of the frame
- Small captions along the bottom edge
- A busy frame with no clear subject
- Text that only appears for a split second
- A cover in a different style from every other Short
Do
- Three to six words in the centre band
- Large type that reads at thumbnail size
- One subject: a face, an object or a statement
- A cover frame held still for about a second
- The same background and type on every cover
Choosing a frame or designing a cover
There are two ways to get a good Shorts thumbnail. The first is to scrub through the video when you upload and pick the most expressive frame: a face mid reaction, the finished result, the moment something changes. That works when your Shorts are filmed and the subject is strong. It fails when every frame is a talking head against the same wall, or when the best moment has motion blur.
The second is to design a cover frame and put it in the video on purpose. You make a still 1080×1920 graphic with a short headline, place it at the start or end of the Short for around a second, then choose it as the cover. Every Short on your channel then shows a designed card in the grid, which is how channels build a recognisable Shorts tab.
A designed cover frame: one promise, set large in the middle band.
A question cover works when the Short answers it within the first seconds.
How to design a YouTube Shorts cover frame
- 1
Start at 1080×1920
Make the cover the exact size of the video so nothing is rescaled when you drop it into your edit.
- 2
Write the promise in six words or fewer
The cover sells the first two seconds. Say what the viewer gets: a result, a number, a question. The craft of short headlines is in thumbnail text.
- 3
Set it large in the centre band
Type should still read when the card is a few centimetres tall on a phone. A heavy sans or a condensed display face at a large size does this best.
- 4
Use one background across the series
A consistent colour or material is what makes a grid of Shorts look like one channel. Change the words, keep the ground.
- 5
Hold it still in the edit
Place the frame for about a second so it is easy to select, and so viewers who land on it see a clean card rather than a blur.
- 6
Pick it as the cover and check the grid
After publishing, open your channel's Shorts tab on a phone. If the words are cut, move them nearer the centre for the next one.
Words on a gradient need care, because contrast shifts across the frame. In Gradiently the Mark behind your design knows where the words are and calms and deepens itself there, and auto ink picks light or dark type for each line, so a headline stays readable without a box or shadow. More on the general problem in text on a gradient background.
One vertical design for every platform
The 1080×1920 frame is the most shared size in social media. The same cover frame can be the first frame of a TikTok, the cover of an Instagram Reel and a story announcing the video. The difference is the interface: Reels and TikTok both put buttons down the right side, so keep a little more space on the right than YouTube needs. See TikTok cover size and Instagram Reel cover size for those crops.
A series cover with a fixed eyebrow and a changing detail line. The structure stays; only the words move.
If you make Shorts weekly, a template saves the most time. Build one cover with fixed positions for the eyebrow, headline and episode line, then swap only the words. On Gradiently Pro you can also export the cover as an MP4, so the frame can carry a slow moving background under still words, and resize the same design to a 1280×720 thumbnail in one step. Questions people ask
What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
1080×1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical frame, the same size as the Short itself.
Can you upload a custom thumbnail for YouTube Shorts?
The usual method is choosing a frame from the video in the YouTube mobile app. Some accounts also see an option to upload an image, so check the cover setting when you edit the Short.
Where should text go on a Shorts cover?
In the centre band of the frame, roughly between 420 and 1500 pixels from the top, because the top and bottom are cropped or covered on several YouTube surfaces.
Can I use a 1280×720 thumbnail for a Short?
Not well. A horizontal image is letterboxed or cropped in the vertical player and grid, so design a separate 1080×1920 cover.
How do I make all my Shorts covers look consistent?
Use one template with the same background, typeface and text positions, and change only the words for each Short.
